Birthcontrol

At Nuvola we can also help you and advise you for contraception.

After giving birth we advise you not to get pregnant within 9 months. It will take about 9 months for your hormonal balance to return and your body to completely heal from the pregnancy and delivery. After a c-section, the gynecologist might even advise you to wait at least a year before getting pregnant again, in order for the scar tissue to heal.

When the blood loss has stopped after delivery, you are able to have sexual intercourse again. This might take up to 6-8 weeks. It is usually unclear when the first ovulation after the delivery will take place, which means that you could get pregnant without noticing.

If you don’t want to get pregnant again, consider what type of contraception suits you. The type of contraception best suited for you is dependent on a number of factors. For example, are you are breast-feeding, would you like to get pregnant again soon or do you wish not to have any more children; your situation will influence your choice of contraception.

Nuvola can inform and advise you regarding your options in birth-control.

Contraception at Nuvola

There are different types of contraception; with or without hormones. Always choose a contraceptive that suits your wishes and needs.

At Nuvola you are welcome for more information. During a contraception consult we explore your expectations. Everyone can make an appointment with Nuvola, even if you have never been to our practice before.

Birth control is discussed at the end of the maternity bed; therefore, a contraception consult is included in our care. For new Nuvola clients we ask €25,- for a consult.

Coils

If you would like to get a coil fitted or are considering it, you can also come to our practice for this.
A coil is a very reliable form of contraception and is also a good option while breast-feeding.
There are two types of coils; the hormonal coil or intrauterine system (IUS) (Mirena or Kyleena) and the hormone-free copper coil or intrauterine device (IUD) (T-safe).

Copper coil

The copper coil is a hormone-free type of contraception and gradually releases a little bit of copper. Copper inactivates the sperm cells that enter the cervix, so no fertilisation can take place. If there is a fertilisation after all, then the copper will prevent it from embedding itself.

The T-safe copper coil is very reliable, hormone-free and can be used for a period of 10 years. Ofcourse, the T-safe may also be used for a shorter amount of time, for example in between two pregnancies.

With a copper spiral you will maintain your own menstrual cycle. Potential side effects during the first months after having the coil fitted may be: a longer or heavier period, stomach cramps and blood loss between periods. After this the natural cycle will return. In some cases the blood loss during your period may increase slightly.

How does it work?
The IUD releases copper gradually. Copper inactivates sperm cells so that they become unable to fertilize
an egg. An IUD has also a morning-after effect if it is inserted within 5 days after unprotected sex. The IUD changes the consistency of the uterine mucous, with the result that a fertilized egg is unable to become implanted in the uterine lining.

The copper coil costs €69,- We will provide the prescription and you can pick-up your coil at the pharmacy. Ask your health insurer if the costs of the spiral are covered.

Hormonal coil

The hormonal coil gradually releases a small amount of hormones and thickens the cervical mucus, which makes it more difficult for sperm to move through the cervix. The hormonal coil can prevent an ovulation. If no egg is released, then no fertilisation can take place.

If there is a fertilisation after all, then this will not be able to embed itself, as there is no build up of cervical mucus. Because there is little to no build up of the cervical mucus, many women with a hormonal coil will have a very light period or none at all.

There are two types of hormonal coils; the Mirena coil and the Kylena coil.

The hormonal coil is a very reliable type of contraception and can be used for a period of 6 years for the Mirena coil and 5 years for the Kylena coil. Of course it is possible to have a hormonal coil removed earlier, for example in between two pregnancies.

The cost of the hormone spiral is €150,- We will provide the prescription and you can pick-up your coil at the pharmacy. Ask your health insurer if the costs of the spiral are covered.

Having a coil fitted

We can fit a coil from 10-12 weeks after the delivery. The cervix and the womb will have completely recovered by then. If you have never given birth before, we prefer to fit the coil within 7 days after the first day of your period. The womb will be slightly open, which will make it easier to fit the coil.

Using an internal ultrasound scan we will determine the position of your womb. This will make the fitting easier. Next, a speculum will be inserted into the vagina so we can get a good view of the cervix.
In order to check if the uterus is suitable for a coil, the length of the uterus is measured using a probe (a thin stick). After this, the coil can be inserted in the cervix through the applicator. Finally, the threads will be cut at the right length.
The insertion can result in a cramping sensation in the lower abdomen.

We advise you take two paracetamol or ibuprofen one hour prior to the fitting of the coil to make the insertion less painful.

It is normal to have abdominal cramps or a nagging sensation in the lower abdomen after fitting the coil. Possibly you experience intermittent blood loss (spotting), because the body needs to get used to the coil. This will usually stop within 3 months after the insertion.

After the spiral is placed, we make an ultrasound scan to check the position of the spiral.

Follow-up check

6 weeks after placing the coil or after the next period we offer the option of checking if the coil is still in the right position using an internal ultrasound scan.

Removing a coil

You can also get a coil removed and directly placed a new one at our practice.
After the coil is removed you will be fertile again.
